Richmond Beach Sunset – August 25, 2010

Alex and I camped out with our tripods in the sand at Richmond Beach in time to see the sunset over the Cascades and try to capture it on film. We chose the spot with little discussion – I hadn’t been there before and it was close to home for both of us – and we chanced upon an idyllic summer sunset over Puget Sound, as well as an appropriately-bittersweet final Seattle photo adventure. Alex and his wife leave for California next week and while my occasional business trips south will hopefully cross our paths again, this chapter of our friendship has sunk beneath the horizon to be risen tomorrow as a long-distance one. In the past year since we both stumbled into the same photography meetup and instantly hit it off we’ve ventured out to see the world through each other’s eyes and lenses only a half-dozen times, perhaps because it seemed there would always be time. Now, however, that our time is up I realize how much I’ve both enjoyed his friendship and missed an opportunity to learn more from him – from his easygoing self-awareness, from his steadfast dream to be a writer, from his life lived so differently than my own. It seems this life, like the shimmering sea in these photos, is forever washing new people onto our shores and then washing them away just as quickly, off to their next adventure just as we continue down the beach to find ours.

Alex, I wish you nothing but success in Sacramento and beyond, and I hope to see you on the beach again soon.

Infiniti of Tacoma Show – August 2010

Today’s show at Infiniti of Tacoma was a little smaller than hoped, as it seems many people were afraid of a little drizzle this morning and opted to sleep in. For those of us that attended, it was well-run and stacked with some very nice cars, in addition to the rows of Infiniti’s that are there every day. Jason’s 88 Silvia was one such ride – a perfectly detailed and meticulously developed car that easily took home the Best of Show award. It’s pretty much the entire first page of my gallery.

Tyler cleaned up the Best Infiniti category with his super clean blue G35, and I came home with both the Best Performance Mods trophy and Best Nissan (!). Honestly, it’s only because Jason’s Silvia already took the top honors that Best Nissan fell to me, but I’m still very flattered by both of them.

In addition to the sheetmetal scenery, the gallery includes a few more of my trophies after I got them home, along with some action shots of a sweet 1:10 scale RC car drifting around a Mt Dew can.

Shoreline Parade – August 2010

Danielle and I walked to the end of our block Saturday morning, grabbed coffee and breakfast at Browns Coffee‘s new shop in our neighborhood (side note: an awesome and welcome addition to North City) and watched the Shoreline neighborhood Parade, one of the last bits trickling out of Seafair 2010′s month-long event lineup. It was a small affair but had all the key local parade ingredients: lots of kids in marching bands, Seafair clowns and pirates, fire trucks, local schools and churches, political candidates, sidewalk vendors and kids elbowing through the crowd mobbing for candy. I swapped on the telephoto lens and got a few shots which are posted below. This one of Wahoo the clown swarmed in bubbles is my favorite.

Seafair Weekend – August 2010

My awesome parents spent the week in Seattle, and as Danielle is in Toronto for the weekend with Jordan I had them all to myself for the past few days. They are two of my best friends and I am so lucky to have the relationship with them that I do. I know it’s a rare arrangement between parents and children that we have and I cherish it; I soak up every day and appreciate every chance I have to know them better as friends, confidants, mentors and equals. I also love to spoil them now that they are enjoying their retirement, and especially when they are in my town and I can show them the best of it. What better week to do that than Seafair week? It’s the height of Seattle summer (sun sometimes optional) and one of my favorite times to be a Seattleite. .

We raced up to the Smith Tower observation level Thursday afternoon, hoping to catch the Navy’s Blue Angels practice laps over the city. While we missed the aeronautics show the view from the 35th floor was pretty great, and I can never get enough urban aerial photography. Friday we took a picnic to Madison Park to catch some Blue Angel fly-overs and people-watch, and Saturday we joined the crowds of raingear-covered fans in Genesee Park for another, much closer look at the air show, the hydro races and the general mayhem that is Seafair. Someday I’ll get them on the lake for the truly authentic experience, and hopefully that someday will be soon and a little sunnier than today, but Mom and Dad are great sports – game for anything and easy to please – and we had an awesome adventure together. I took a few marginal pictures of the air show through the binoculars that I posted, along with a lot of Seattle’s streets from 35 floors above Yesler Wy, and a few shots of the two greatest people I’ve been blessed to share this life with. Thanks for a great weekend, you two!

Chuckanut Drive – July 2010

One of the local Honda S2000 groups put together a casual drive around the Chuckanut Highway loop, and Christie and I tagged along. It was a great day for a drive and the group was very cool, sticking around for burgers and beer afterward. If we had known the Chuckanut oyster festival was this weekend I guess we could have planned to do that for lunch – maybe next year if we make a habit of it. I tried out my new GoPro camera on the trip, stuck to my fender with its suction cup, but I still have some experimenting to do to find the right settings and mount point. I’m going to take a solo drive so I can play with it more, but here’s one slice of the footage that I kind of liked, entirely unedited:

Mount Baker Drive – July 2010

I stumbled across a group in Bellingham who were setting up a Mount Baker cruise across several different forums, and the resulting crowd was pretty diverse – Infiniti, Mazda, Honda, Subaru, even an Ariel Atom. I met some cool new drivers, blew some winter dust out of my car, thoroughly enjoyed myself, and came home with a some nice pictures. I took a few glamour shots of my Z on the drive, too, but this gallery is the shots of the group.

Greenwood Car Show – June 2010

Danielle and I could have walked around this show for hours, and not just because it stretched for 30 blocks solid down Greenwood Ave on a beautiful summer day. So many of the cars were impeccably clean, beautifully restored, and just plain beautiful – full of curves, wings, fins, vents, portholes and chrome in a way that cars never are anymore. I wanted to take pictures of absolutely everything, but confined myself to painfully few shots per car in an effort to at least walk the length of the show before it ended and even then did not succeed, as the southern end of Greenwood was packing up to leave by the time we neared. I’m definitely headed to this show again next year as it is probably the best and most cleverly-located hotrod show in Seattle. I might even enter it myself, as there is a category for modern imports and it was far from inspiring.
